When I am thinking of white, it is like a big holiday, I love winter, I love this whiteness, and whiteness is very important for Russians, because white is clean, it is shiny, at the same time it is emptiness, but in a very positive way. In Petersburg there are two periods, for example white nights and sometimes white winter and I like this big surface covered with ice. White is never pure, white doesn't exist actually, it has various shadows, it is little bit blue, grey, yellow. No, I don't think its a contradiction to the city, I think it belongs to this city. When I used to walk a lot in the city, I never took pictures in the summertime, only in the winter. Interview, 2003
